BA has introduced a new class for its transatlantic service from London City to reflect differences in the product with the standard Club World cabin.

Club World London City offers the six-feet flat bed seat configured 2-2. These all face forward, unlike the standard BA layout with the aisle seat facing forward and the window seat facing backwards.

The London City service is aimed firmly at business travellers rather than the premium leisure market and the cabin is more attuned to being productive or resting than dining and being entertained.

Unlike BA's other New York services, the A318 offers email, text and internet access via the OnAir system, which is available when the aircraft is flying above 10,000 feet. Seats have two separate power points for UK and US users to connect computers. Instead of the normal flip-up TV screen, entertainment is via a personal media player which you either clip into the armrest or put on your lap. This is an on-demand entertainment system, but contains different options from the standard Club World selection.

The meal service on the westbound leg takes place after the immigration procedures have been carried out during the refueling stop in Shannon and is similar to that found in the Club World cabin. However, on the London-bound leg, which is non-stop, passengers are encouraged to eat in the Terraces lounge at JFK, so once onboard, only a snack and a nightcap are served. A hot breakfast is produced as late as possible  before landing and there is an option for a takeaway if you want to sleep longer.

Above all, BA is stressing speed and convenience with its new flights, providing a 15-minute check-in at London City for those with hand baggage (20 minutes for passengers with hold luggage), plus speedy disembarkation in New York, because the flight clears customs and immigration during its Shannon stop and arrives in the US as a domestic service.

My flight outbound to the West Coast was generally fine - the food has definitely improved with the 'Height Cusine' innovations, but the service was not what I would call customer-centric. As I usually sit in 62K on the Upper Deck, one faces the 2 cabin crew seats for take off and landing. This literally forces you to listen to the 'chat' for quite a period. On the... more

Thanks to overbooking and a cancelled flight the day before, my husband and I were lucky enough to be upgraded to Club World on our flight back from London. Having flown World Traveler on the inbound flight this was a HUGE upgrade! This was brilliant on their part because now we will never fly anything other than business class again. Thee wonderful BA crew never... more
