FormerlyDoS flew SAS Economy, on a B737-800 (22/05/2012 02:54)

I needed to get from MLA to GOT and this was the first of two connecting flights, to ARN.

As business class was not available, I selected premium economy and chose seat 2D, using my Miles and More account.

The check in was t the business class counter and a staff member was ensuring that only those people or card holders were using it, so it the waiting time was short - much appreciated.

The boarding was typical for Malta, with a short walk to the aircraft and on entering, I was greeted warmly by the crew, who would turn out to be at the top end of the scale.

2D had a little more pitch, so I imagine it is often sold as a business class seat. The row had three seats, but the middle one was empty, as was the row in front (which I believe was good fortune, rather than a feature of this class.)

There was no pre take-off drink (not that I expected one) and soon after take-off, the meal service commenced (BoB for economy and included for premium.) The meal was a very pleasant chicken salad, which was both tasty and also large enough to feel like a proper meal, rather than a snack. I washed it down with a glass of red wine, which was pleasantly mellow (although I didn't ask what it was.)

The flight itself was about three and a half hours long and was a non-event, in the nicest sense. The crew were attentive all the way through, offering a top up drink, from time to time and were friendly and warm, which was much appreciated.

On arrival at Arlanda, I had quite a long walk to connect to a dommestic gate, but it felt good to get some exercise after a longish short haul flight and having cleared an efficient and pleasant security screening, was in plenty of time for my 40 minute hop to GOT on an old (but well maintained and immaculately clean) MD80.

All in all, very good value for money and a throwback to good flights in the 1980s on SAS.

SAS are a very good airline, they may not get much credit, but they are very good in certain areas. The flight I took was one from oslo to bergen. For a 40 min flight one does want a little bit of service. A selection of newspapers and free tea and coffee is very good for 40 min. All in all are both comfotable and easy, notto mention all most allways on time!!

Review of SAS economy extra - Bangkok - Copenhagen ( A 340-300 )

This was the first time i flew economy extra long haul and i was both impressed and not so impressed.

Boarding went well and you feel very welcomed by cabin crew once you step aboard.
Amenity kit was ok, nothing special even though you get a handy "mini- toothbrush with toothpaste".

At first my seat was very comfortable, but when it was time for a snooze it didn't really live up to my expectations.
Mainly due to the seat feeling almost like a standard economy seat. ( I flew economy on my flight down to Bangkok) and also because other airlines have stepped up their game offering premium economy seats that have a significant difference in style than the economy seats you see further back in the plane.

Service however is of good quality and I was glad to see the cabin crew come several times during the flight offering cold water to keep passengers from getting dehydrated.
They are very profesional and take great pride in their work :)

The entertainment was one of the least impressive aspects of the flight. You would think that SAS have learnt from other major airlines that have a vast library of movies, shows, games etc.
Not so on this flight. I had maybe less than 20 movies to choose from and the screen was the same size as the ones in economy. Again dissapointing, when you know that Emirates, Singapore, Air France, Virgin Atlantic, and many other airlines have an almost limitless "audio on demand" selection.
The "tv control" actually looks very similar to the old Nintendo hand controler and is virtualy impossible to use with one hand. Very annoying when trying to eat or drink when watching a movie.
I hope SAS will learn from this in the future and offer it's passengers a better product.

Food and drink was nothing too special, but hey, unless you pay the big bucks you won't be getting the Hollywood treatment. Lighter food would be a nice touch for those long over-night flights.

I didn't pay attention when the captain announced our actual landing time, but i belive we were at least 15 minutes ahead of schedule. There is a reason why SAS is the most punctual airline in Europe.

Half the reason for chosing economy extra was the generous baggage allowance.
We had no problems checking in close to 100 kg.
The only thing i would like to comment from a very personal view is that when we landed at our final destination ( Oslo), one of our bags came on the baggage belt half opened and with a huge dent and scratch marks. We went straight to the SAS service counter. Within 5 minutes we were offered a new hard top suitcase, but this was of a smaller size so we were given a special piece of paper that enables us to be issued a new suitcase. Very good customer service! Apart from this episode, baggage in economy extra is one of the best features of the class and may be the better option then flying standard economy with 23 kg allowance.

All in all, if you feel like flying a bit more comfortable, and be more in control of what you eat, drink, watch on the tv, whilst enjoying some envious looks by those in the back of the plane, economy extra is worth the extra money and in fact it's not that expensive if you book earlie!

Safe travels!

Norbert_G flew SAS Business, on a A340-300 (17/09/2010 19:56)

Flying SAS often to PEK and TOKYO via CPH on Biz Cl. I find the Airline decent, but they have now what so ever sense of service... Even for the most expensive Business class, i have to pay extra charge for any change. The seat is old fashion and not at all comfy for sleeping. Service is like Lufthansa or United: The most experienced serve the Biz passengers= Granny Serving your food... (still love my granny, but she should not work there...) All in all, not worth the money or the milage earned.

"The most punctual airline in the world" was the boast and they certainly were. Every effort was made to keep to time and, coupled with the excellent, attentive on-board service this made for a very pleasant journey from Heathrow to Oslo (and return).

Well done - I will be using them again in the future.

Good new generation angled lie-flat seat. Food service is great on outbound lunch-time flights (from Scandinavia to USA). Inbound dinner-time service is a rush because they assume that everybody wants to sleep asap.

Scandinavian Airlines Economy (longhaul) offers ok seats for sitting, but not great for sleeping. The entertainment system could be better. You have to wait for a movie to start/finish when they run in a loop. Not like Virgin Atlantic where you have complete control over when you want to start a film. Service on the ground and onboard is great, but food could be more exciting. You get a meal for "dinner", but no breakfast. You get a snack. Free drinks included.
