KLM has several types of economy class seating for its long-haul fleet. They have an average pitch of 31 inches (79cm).

New economy class seats are available on B777/A330s (the newest additions to the KLM fleet) and B747-400s. These feature adjustable headrests with movable flaps at the side, extra legroom created by a specially designed seat frame, and reading lamps.

Another new economy feature is AVOD which is available on B777, B747-400, 747-400 combi, MD11 and A330 aircraft and offers a choice of 60 movies. Screens are 6.5 inches (16.5cm) across while controls are seat-based and hand-held (not touchscreen). There are also in-seat and wall-mounted telephones for those who need privacy.

On older Boeing 747s, economy class cabins are fitted with overhead video systems. On flights longer than seven hours, two movies are shown and on flights longer than 10 hours, three are shown. Free headsets are provided.

Passengers receive a hot meal (often more than one depending on the flight duration) with real metal cutlery. On long haul flights of more than eight hours, a second meal is served in a disposable box branded 'Selected Delights'. On flights from six to eight hours, a second meal is served. Depending on the destination time, it will either be a warm pizza snack or breakfast served just before landing. The latter is offered in a branded 'Dole' box, with warm rolls, fresh coffee and tea.

In between services, passengers can treat themselves to a 'Skybreak' from various tidbits displayed in the galleys. During the main movie, ice creams are served.

Drinks (including alcohol) are free on KLM for all passengers, with the exception of champagne.

Those wanting the extra legroom seats must pay €20-70 per one-way flight depending on duration. However, these are free for Flying Blue Platinum and Gold card-holders.

Some aircraft have a number of pairs of seats by themselves and these can be reserved for €30 each one-way.

This flight that I took is the short haul leg on the return journey to AMS (Schiphol) from CGK (Jakarta) via KUL (Kuala Lumpur). The crew, normally changed in KUL and thus, is the same crew that is flying KUL-CGK leg before. Check-in - I arrived at the airport 2 hours before scheduled departure of 6.50pm. I didn't have internet access whilst in Jakarta so I had to... more

HYC.bigtimeflyer flew KLM Economy, on a B747-400

KLM I'm a person who flies quite a bit, and my total destination was London for a vacation. We chose KLM out of curiosity, and was NOT disappointing at all! Boarding, though it took a little while (Since it was LAX) but absolutely no problem. When I got in the plane, it was a friendly, relaxed, and not the uptight, uncomfy Economy class feeling. Seats were great,... more
